Mine closure is more than the end of extraction—it is the beginning of renewal. By planning resilient end-land uses from the start and restoring social ecological systems throughout a mine’s life, we honour the land’s past, support communities and create landscapes that thrive long into the future.

Gabriel is a Senior Sustainability Scientist and Project Manager with over 22 years of experience in the extractive industry, implementing sustainable programs with complex operations in the mining, and oil and gas sectors in North and South America. Gabriel has led multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, environment, social, and scientific professionals to conduct major social-environmental assessments, corporate strategic executions, and ESG initiatives.

Gabriel is an engineer by training and interdisciplinary by design. He applies a sustainability-focused, cross-functional perspective, to improve processes, manage corporate risks, and pursue growth that creates value for both business and society.

Gabriel completed his PhD at the University of British Columbia, Canada, where he researched global strategies for climate risk management in the mining industry and developed a novel assessment system for climate risk and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies for mine closure planning. Gabriel is a frequent speaker at international conferences and lectures in universities.

Additionally, Gabriel volunteers as the Director of Publications for the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Environmental and Social Responsibility Society (ESRS) and leads the Working Group on Environmental, Climate Change, Genomics and Mine Closure.
